Schoolchildren, secondary and vocational school students or children from childrens homes and health institutions in various towns and cities in the whole Czech Republic - Ostrava, Kladno, Frýdek Místek, Krnov, Louny, Prague and many others - have been already working on 523 computers from RadioMobil. A number of schools and institutions that were donated computer technology by Paegas had been constantly struggling with a lack of computer equipment, and very often the available equipment was largely out of date. Moreover, the computers donated by RadioMobil enable the users not only to use state-of-the-art programs but also immediate Internet access.
"We are pleased that we can provide young people with access to computer technology, without which they will be hardly successful in their future jobs," says the spokeswoman of RadioMobil, Tereza Kakosová. "The role of a technological leader in the telecommunications market directly binds us to participate in such projects."
RadioMobil has established a GSM laboratory in the Department of Radioelectronics of the Technical University in Brno that gives all students an opportunity to study this technology in practice. Two BTS stations, notebooks with TEMS measuring software, GSM modems for the transfer of measured data and other special measuring devices have been installed directly at the Technical University. Equipment at the total value exceeding 2 million crowns of course also includes telephone sets and SIM cards. In addition to that, the teachers of the Technical University co-operate with RadioMobils experts in finding solutions for various projects and assigning and supervising theses.
RadioMobil also helped equip with devices the Department of Telecommunication Technology of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague to which the company donated notebooks with accessories, Siemens data module and telephones. "We used all the devices donated to us by RadioMobil to equip our departments laboratory," says the head of the department, doc. ing. Boris Šimák, CSc. "Some students have been already working on their theses on the subject of application of data collection from mobile terminals. Of course, the phones and notebooks are not only being used by a few graduate students, at the same time they serve as examples of state-of-the-art technology. The laboratory will remain open for interested students even outside regular classes."
However, equipment with devices is not the only help within the computer world provided by RadioMobil in order to educate the public. Already in mid-January a campaign was launched in the whole Czech Republic called "Internet Changes the World," the aim of which is to make both expert and general public familiar with advantages that the Internet brings to its users. RadioMobil is the partner of the campaign that takes place under the patronage of prominent political personalities. Czech government representatives and members of parliament (Minister of Interior Stanislav Gross, Minister and Government Office Manager Karel BĹ?ezina, and MPs Vladimír MlynáĹ? and Ivan Langer) together with the representatives of the Information Society Association (SPIS) will tour twelve large cities of the country to demonstrate usage of the Internet in various fields to representatives of secondary schools, municipal authorities, local entrepreneurs and managers as well as the general public. The roadshow "Internet Changes the World" has already taken place in Ostrava, Brno, Pilsen and it has been attended by more than 300 secondary school students. The next event will take place again this week on Thursday in Hradec Králové and it will then come to other large cities.
The joint-stock company RadioMobil is the operator of a GSM 900/1800 MHz network called Paegas. Since 1996, when RadioMobil entered the Czech market and brought in competition, it obtained almost two million customers. RadioMobil sells prepaid services under the brand Paegas Twist, which is the most successful prepaid service in the Czech market, providing its users with a whole range of services such as data and fax connection, GSM Banking based on the SIM Toolkit standard, Paegas Assistant services, access to WAP services and furthermore it offers a free e-mail ClickBox Easy. Paegas Click is another brand of RadioMobil, focused on customers with Internet or WAP access. At www.click.cz they can easily configure services as well as for instance use a comprehensive e-mail box based on the unified messaging technology. RadioMobil belongs to the Deutsche Telekom Group - one of the worlds biggest telecommunication operators. Through its subsidiary company T-Mobil (Deutsche Telekoms mobile operator) it owns 87.3 % in the consortium CMobil. Other shareholders of CMobil are: STET Mobile Holdings N.V. (12 %) and PVT a.s. (0.7 %). The international consortium CMobil is, together with Ceské radiokomunikace, a shareholder of RadioMobil. In 2001 CMobil is going to enforce an option that will increase its stake in RadioMobil from the existing 49 % to 60.8 %.
Today, the Paegas GSM network covers over 99% of the Czech population and 99.8% of first class roads. RadioMobil customers may use their mobile phones in networks of 200 operators from 88 countries of the whole world (121 various locations altogether). By the end of 2000, more than 1,850,000 customers were using Paegas services.
