- In total, T-Mobile operates 6,711 base stations in the Czech Republic
- Every 15 km2 area is covered by one base-station group
- The large number of locations and investment into the network enhancement will ensure easy transition to LTE
Prague, 20 January 2011 – T-Mobile celebrated an important great event at the beginning of this year, when the municipality of Sloup v Čechách became the 5,000th location to host the operator’s technologies. Currently T-Mobile operates 6,711 base transceiver stations with the GSM, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS TDD and UMTS FDD network technologies. On average, one base station covers 15 km2 of Czech territory.
“The large number of locations where we have already constructed the complete necessary infrastructure enables us to implement fast new technologies, such as UMTS FDD with HSPA+ technology support. In future, this will also significantly speed up LTE implementation,” says Frank Meywerk, Technology Director at T‑Mobile.
In recent years, T-Mobile has massively invested into the renovation and reinforcement of its network coverage. The enhancement of all base stations in the GSM network brought about tremendous savings not only of energy, but also space. T-Mobile also focused on increasing the transmission capacities and coverage of its core optical network. The basic prerequisites for rapid expansion of the 3G (UMTS FDD) network have thus been created. At the same time, the utilised technology is prepared for future transition to LTE.
T-Mobile’s base stations are generally mounted on rooftops of buildings and special masts fitted with a cabin. In some attractive locations, T-Mobile also reconstructed local viewing towers or constructed new ones as part of the construction of base stations.
“Reaching the threshold of 5,000 locations does not mean that we are finished with the expansion of our networks. We will continue with construction in order to improve the quality of our coverage and increase network capacity,” Frank Meywerk adds.
