T-Mobile 2010 Small Grant: Break Down the Walls

Prague, 14 January 2011 – Small Grants is a T-Mobile’s project through which the operator has been supporting socially beneficial activities of secondary-school students since 2007. In the past three years, 330 projects of students from across the country have received support. At the end of last year, T-Mobile decided to select and support the best project of 2010 dedicated to the topic “Healthy Planet”. In total, eleven projects were competing for the Small Grant award, prepared by secondary-school students from across the entire country. In the end, a group of professionals composed of media representatives and publishing houses unanimously agreed on the winner, Petra Korytářová from the EKO Grammar School, with her project “Break Down the Walls”.

“The quality of student projects has been improving year by year,” says Martina Kemrová, Senior Head of Corporate Communication at T-Mobile, adding: “That’s why we have decided to present a special prize to the best artist, who will receive from us the same financial amount that he or she needed for implementing his or her idea. The winner may use this amount for further development of the project or for its promotion.”

Petra Korytářová, a second-year student at the EKO Grammar School in Poděbrady, prepared and implemented a project on inpatients of the children’s haematology and oncology department at Prague’s Motol hospital. Petra’s personal experience inspired the project, as she was once a patient at this facility, which helped her to communicate more easily with the other children there. Students participating in this project taught child patients to work with computers and the internet, read fairy tales to them and played interesting games with them. The author decided to use the received amount of CZK 10,000 to launch a similar project again this year.

The second highest number of points was awarded to the project called “Park from Spring to Winter” prepared by a team of students from the Karel Čapek Grammar School in Dobříš, followed by the “Travelling Back to History” project implemented by the Blovice Grammar School. The originators of these two projects will be awarded material prizes.

The nominated projects were evaluated by a jury consisting of representatives of the media and publishing houses (Mobil.cz, Katka, HR Forum, Economia, Bauer Media and MF Dnes). There were five criteria in total: healthy community, healthy environment, originality, sustainability and publicity.

T-Mobile Small Grants
T-Mobile has been conducting the Small Grants project in cooperation with the Aisis Civic Association since 2007. In total, 330 projects have been supported to date. The fifth round of the grant program is currently running at ten selected schools. Small Grants enables students to submit an application for a project of their choosing and the implementation is fully in their hands. The main coordinator is always a pedagogue who helps students with filling out their applications, project preparation and general organization. The project originators not only receive a financial contribution from T-Mobile, but most importantly they gain valuable knowledge about project management.
