T-Mobile again expands its 3G network coverage

  • 326 more locations covered by the 3G network
  • 97 new shared base stations
  • Nearly 60% of the Czech population covered

Prague, 14 September 2011 – T-Mobile was busy working on expanding its 3G network coverage also during summer, with most new additions being added to the 3G coverage map in August. Fast internet access is now available to customers in 300 more towns and communities in the Czech Republic. Within the cooperation project with Telefónica O2, an additional 97 shared base stations were put into operation, thus increasing the extent of 3G network coverage to 58.59% of the population of the Czech Republic.

The largest towns where residents can now enjoy the 3G network include, for example, Kolín, Hodonín, Žďár nad Sázavou, Jindřichův Hradec, Břeclav, Kutná Hora, Bruntál, Pelhřimov and Kralupy nad Vltavou.

The number of shared base stations has been growing too as the implementation of the cooperation project with Telefónica Czech Republic continues. An additional 97 new base stations were put into operation in summer, putting the number of base stations of each partner shared within the project at 110. Fast internet access is thus now available to residents of Boskovice, Studénka, Chodov, Lysá nad Labem, Telč, Zruč, Ledeč nad Sázavou, Vizovice, and Lázně Bohdaneč, among many other communities.

All base stations built by the operator are equipped with the enhanced HSPA+ technology, which means that, with appropriate terminal devices (e.g., the Huawei E 1823 modem), they are able to provide users the fastest data transmissions in the Czech Republic.

Independent measurements performed by the German company P3 communications GmbH have confirmed that T-Mobile offers the fastest file download performance and the fastest web browsing service of all GSM/UMTS mobile radio networks in the Czech Republic. This conclusion is based on an independent performance benchmark measurement campaign performed by P3 communications between May 25, 2011 and June 7, 2011 in the cities of Ostrava, Olomouc, Brno, Prague, České Budějovice, Plzeň, Pardubice, Hradec Králové, Liberec and Ústí nad Labem. The tests were executed as outdoor drive tests with 15dB total attenuation on the antenna path. The results refer to the highest average throughput measured on an FTP download of incompressible bulk content for a fixed 20s duration and to the shortest average of the measured web session time for a download of the ETSI Copernicus reference page from a server which offers no content compression. Measurements for all operators were executed with a Sierra Wireless MC8700 (21 Mbit/s download / 5.76 Mbit/s upload) modem in 3G preferred mode and an identical non-limiting set of TCP parameters. Customers who wish to check the availability of the 3G network in a particular location can do so in two ways: they may either test signal strength and transmission speed by borrowing from the operator  a Huawei E 1823 modem with the Internet na cesty plan free of charge for seven days (against a returnable deposit of CZK 2,000) or they can inquire about the coverage at www.facebook.com/TmobileCz.
