T-Mobile has commercially launched Wi-Fi calling also for contract customers. For technical reasons, the service had previously been available only to corporate customers. The number of handsets supporting the technology has also been increased – apart from the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge, the service can now be used with the Galaxy S6 and the iPhone 5s, 5c, 6, 6 plus, 6s and 6s plus. Wi-Fi calling is now potentially available to approximately 140,000 customers who use a handset supporting the service.

“We were the first operator to introduce Wi-Fi calling and we are still the only operator in the Czech Republic offering this service,” says Milan Hába, Vice President Technology & Business Innovations at T-Mobile, adding: “By making the service available also to contract customers, we are fulfilling the promise we made at the end of last year, when we launched Wi-Fi calling only for corporate customers.”

Wi-Fi calling is based on the Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWi-Fi) technology, which enables making standard mobile calls and sending text and multimedia messages over a Wi-Fi network. With this technology, users can make calls and send messages from their numbers in the same way as they do in a mobile network. To use the service, which is free of charge, all customers need to do is switch it on in the menu of their handset (a condition is to have up-to-date firmware and, in the case of Samsung handsets, to have a device purchased in the T-Mobile distribution network). Calls and messages are billed according to the customer’s tariff plan.

The service offers superior quality voice transmission with suppression of ambient noise and fast call connection (similarly as VoLTE). The service is valuable particularly in places where there may be problems with the strength or quality of the mobile signal. If a Wi-Fi network is available in a particular place, the phone will use it automatically. When customers leave a place with Wi-Fi coverage, calls switch smoothly to the LTE network, similarly as in the case of VoLTE calls. The same principle also applies when switching from LTE to Wi-Fi.
