Breast cancer prevention: Mamma Help lectures in Hradec Králové starting soon

  • Every twelfth woman in the Czech Republic develops a breast tumor
  • Lectures on breast cancer from the Mamma Help association starting on 16 November
  • T-Mobile Fund finances the equipment needed for the lectures

Prague/ Hradec Králové, 13 November 2006 - It is estimated that, on average, one woman dies of breast cancer every five hours in the Czech Republic. Many of these deaths could be prevented by a regular sonographic or mammographic examination enabling early treatment. In this way, the death rate could be lowered by up to forty percent since a malignant tumor that is detected early can be very easily removed. This is the message that Mamma Help, the Association of Breast Cancer Patients in Hradec Králové, conveys to high-school students as well as adult women employed in organizations and companies in and around Hradec Králové. The first such lecture will take place on 16 November at Božena Němcová grammar school in Hradec Králové.

The T-Mobile fund is financing the Mamma Help project with a donation of CZK 80,000 through the VIA Foundation. The money was used to purchase the technology needed for the lectures - a data projector, notebook, and printer. "Four therapists from the Mamma Help association, women that have experienced the disease themselves, will deliver lectures on the risk of developing breast cancer, the course of the illness, its treatment, but above all, the possibilities of prevention," says Martina Kemrová, Head of Corporate Communication of T-Mobile, adding: "Under the therapists' guidance, those interested can learn the correct method of breast self-examination, which is an important element in preventing the disease. Women should perform this self-examination at least once a month and they should promptly visit their doctor as soon as they notice any irregularities."

Every twelfth woman in the Czech Republic experiences breast cancer in her lifetime. At the same time, it is difficult to anticipate which women are more or less likely to suffer from the disease. Preventive examinations are the only means of detecting potential or actual illness. Every woman should undergo a mammogram or sonogram every two years. These exams enable tumor detection at earlier stages than is possible using only manual examination. Health insurance companies reimburse preventive sonographic or mammographic examinations of women aged 45 to 69 conducted once every two years.
