Enjoy the Magenta Weekend at T-Mobile observation towers

  • Exciting programme at nine T-Mobile BTS towers during the weekend of 22 and 23 August
  • T-Mobile network currently consists of more than 4,500 base stations
  • T-Mobile has the best network in the Czech Republic according to the P3 Solutions survey

Prague, 18 August 2009 - Magenta will be the colour at nine observation towers in nine regions of the Czech Republic on the weekend of 22 and 23 August 2009. During this "Magenta Weekend", visitors to the observation towers, which also double as T-Mobile base-transceiver stations (BTS), can learn interesting facts about the network of the Czech largest mobile operator. The programme also features games and competitions for children and adults. Tourists will certainly appreciate special tourist maps of the Czech Republic showing the location of observation towers. The paths to the observation towers will be clearly marked with signs. At the entrance, visitors will be greeted by hostesses and asked whether they wish to participate in a tipping competition to win a lenticular sticker. They will also receive a small gift made specifically for this occasion - a tourist map and an imprint of a special stamp. Many activities have also been prepared for children, for example a possibility to build an observation tower using a building set.

Czech users are accustomed to the possibility of being able to call anywhere and anytime. Mobile signal is omnipresent and invisible and it is very difficult to see what lies behind "it". In addition to a great amount of human labour, mobile services could not be provided without technological background. And it is the technological equipment that the Magenta Weekend wants to present to users of mobile services who make their calls every day, perhaps thanks to the signal transmitted by one of the nine observation towers. In addition to these towers, the T-Mobile network consists of other 4,500 base stations that are being replaced with modern, energy-effective base stations supplied by Huawei. Along with the massive modernisation of the existing GSM network, involving investments of CZK 3.5 billion last year only, T-Mobile is also extending its EDGE coverage, which is now available to 91% of the Czech population, and improving the quality of coverage. According to the survey conducted by an independent company P3 Solutions, T-Mobile has the best network in the Czech Republic, with 99.6% success rate on call set-up. Investments into modernisation of the GSM network are planned to reach CZK 4 billion.

A record number of 800 base stations will be replaced during this July and August only. In addition to the EDGE technology, the modernised base stations will offer a new functionality, Paging Coordination, which allows users to receive incoming calls even if they are browsing the web. If there is an incoming call, the data connection is suspended and renewed after the call is finished.
