GPRS Traffic in the T-Mobile Network Trebled in May

  • More than 50% of users chose the GPRS Basic tariff
  • Data services are used most frequently in Prague, Brno and Hradec Králové
  • "Data peak" was recorded between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m.
  • GPRS transmission is mostly ensured through the CS3 and CS4 coding schemes

Prague, 16 June 2003 - The introduction of new data tariffs was reflected in a significant increase of GPRS transmission in the T-Mobile network. During a single month, the volume of transmitted data increased by approximately 200% and the largest volume of transmitted data was recorded in Prague, Brno and Hradec Králové. Almost 70% of all GPRS transmission is ensured via the CS3 and CS4 coding schemes, which on the Czech market are offered only by T-Mobile. These coding schemes enable a significantly higher transmission speed (up to 85.6 kbit/s) in comparison with other operators. The new tariffs became valid on 5 May 2003. In relation to the GPRS Business tariff, T-Mobile also offers unlimited access to data for a period of three months.

"The increase of traffic was apparent from the first day on which the new tariffs were introduced, and by the end of May it increased three times compared with the previous periods," says Jiří Hájek, the spokesman for T-Mobile and adds: "This increase proves that we managed to make data transmissions more attractive thanks to our new tariffs, and we are therefore pleased with the customers' interest."

Use of individual tariffs
In one month upon the introduction of the new GPRS tariffs, more than half of the users decided to use the GPRS Basic tariff. The second most popular tariff is the GPRS Twist tariff that is preferred by nearly 40% of the customers using data services, followed by the GPRS Standard with more than 10% of users (see chart 1). A significant increase of interest was recorded in the case of the GPRS Business tariff in May: as of 1 June, its use increased by five times the value of 11 May 2003 (see chart 2).

Increase of the GPRS traffic
As of the introduction of the new GPRS tariffs till the end of May, T-Mobile recorded an increase of the overall GPRS traffic by 200%.  Rapid growth was evident particularly in the first half of the month (see chart 3). Prague, Brno and Hradec Králové showed the largest volume of data transmitted via GPRS. Whereas in Prague the GPRS traffic grew by 64% in May, Brno recorded a 61% increase of the GPRS use, and the same parameter reached 485% in Hradec Králové. The actual dissemination of the GPRS traffic according to the amount of transmitted data in individual regions is illustrated on Picture 1.

Daily GPRS traffic
According to the average distribution of the GPRS traffic during a working day, the T-Mobile network recorded the largest volume of data being transmitted between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. in May, in comparison with the "voice peak" that was between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. (see chart 4).

Use of the CS3 and CS4 coding schemes
Chart 5 shows that the overwhelming majority of GPRS transmissions, i.e. almost 70%, is done via the CS3 and CS4 coding schemes. The CS3 and CS4 coding schemes are currently available in almost 40% of the T-Mobile network – however, these areas contribute by 80% to the overall GPRS traffic. They are available to customers in large cities in the Czech Republic and also, for example, in the Krkonoše. Further extension of areas in which they will be available, is in progress.
