Louny has a new, high-quality baseball field

  • Lokomotiva Louny aspiring to take the European championship
  • A pleasant recreational area for the residents of Louny has been created with support from the T-Mobile Fund

Prague, 26 April 2007 - After almost twenty years of effort, the Lokomotiva Louny sports club now has a very high-quality baseball facility. The completion of its construction will be celebrated with a prestigious nationwide sporting event - a baseball tournament, which will be part of the Youth Olympics.

"Lokomotiva Louny, with its adult, children's and youth teams, has been a successful baseball club for more than twenty-five years. Therefore, we are very pleased that the T-Mobile Fund has had the opportunity to support Lokomotiva in reaching such an important milestone," says T-Mobile's Head of Corporate Communication Martina Kemrová.

Lokomotiva Louny has been involved in the construction of the baseball facility since 1988. Despite this, the club's sports results have been better than the quality of its baseball field for many years. Since 1990, Lokomotiva has participated in the 1st Czech Baseball League and even took part in the Czech Premier League for two years. "Baseball is played on fields of three different sizes, depending on the respective age category. That's why we also needed two fields for young players," explains Jan Červa, a member of the club's executive committee, long-time player, coach and manager of the facility, adding: "We have 80 members, organized - in addition to two men's teams - in teams for children, younger and older cadets and juniors."

Last year, Lokomotiva decided to renovate the entire baseball facility. The project in the value of CZK 223,000 was supported by the T-Mobile Fund with a donation of CZK 120,000 provided via the Euroregion Labe Foundation. The remaining amount was collected through various contributions and small gifts as well as the efforts of Lokomotiva members. "In addition to having fields for both adult and young players, the facility is a pleasant place to relax for people from the greater area," says Jan Červa.

In June, the new facility will host a baseball tournament as part of the 3rd Summer Olympic Games for Children and Youths from the Czech Republic, with the participation of 12 youth sports teams. The Olympics take place every two years and will be held in Ústí nad Labem this year. As the city does not have a baseball field, the baseball tournament has been moved to Louny. The Olympics will open in Ústí nad Labem on 19 June, the baseball games will be held in Louny on the following day and the final game is planned for Saturday, 23 June. As Jan Červa explains: "This will be a big nationwide event and so we wanted to have the baseball facility ready. Next year, we would like to organize the Czech Youth Championship and hopefully, some time later, the European Youth Championship." Lokomotiva was selected as the organizer of the Youth Olympics based on the successful organization of the Younger Cadets' National Championship in 2006.

Last year, the Euroregion Labe Community Foundation distributed almost CZK 2 million out of the total CZK 5.4 million available in the T-Mobile Fund, contributing to various projects in the Louny region. The rest of the money from the T-Mobile Fund is administered by the VIA Foundation, operating in the regions of Hradec Králové and Prague 11. Last year, the T-Mobile Fund supported a total of 71 projects selected out of 206 applications.
