Mobile operators and the largest Banks in the Czech Republic have formed a Mobile Payment Association

  • The Association aims to create a convenient, universal, and safe method for using mobile phones to make payments

Prague, September 12, 2002 â?" The three main mobile operators and the five most important banks have founded the Mobile Payment Association. The aim of the MPA is to develop and support a unified system for mobile phone payments, thus boosting the development of mobile financial services. This will provide the Czech public with access to a simple, safe, and universal method for making purchases via mobile phones. The system will be usable not only in the Czech Republic, but also through roaming abroad.

Today ÄŚeská spoĹ?itelna, ÄŚeskoslovenská obchodní banka, ÄŚeský Mobil, Eurotel Praha, GE Capital Bank, HVB Bank Czech Republic, KomerÄŤní banka and Radiomobil signed the Articles of Association of Legal Persons and became the founding members of the Mobile Payment Association. It is an open association, and other banks and mobile operators present in the Czech Republic may join. The management includes representatives from the founding members. The official representative for the association is the chairman of the Board of Directors, elected to a one-year term. Terrence Valeski, Eurotelâ?? s CEO and Managing Director have been elected the associations first chairman as Eurotel initiated the founding of the MPA. The members of MPA also elected representative of ÄŚeská spoĹ?itelna Karel Jan JeníÄŤek, deputy CEO & Member of the Board of Directors, as the deputy chairman of the Association.

The MPA established three groups to develop the universal payment model for mobile phones: the Business Group, the Requirements & Technology Group, and the Marketing Group. The Business Group will examine business models for mobile payments; the Requirements & Technology Group will concentrate on the technical aspects of mobile phone payments; and the Marketing Group will survey the customer demand and market requirements.

The Mobile Payment Association will either develop a new model for making payments by mobile phone or implement a functional foreign model. The objective is to find internationally accepted model. At the moment, worldwide, there exist two key initiatives for mobile phone payments: the Spanish Mobipay mobile wallet and T-Mobile/Vodafone initiative.
