Modernized 2G network is environmentally friendly

  • The new technology consumes 45% less energy
  • This helps reduce CO2 emissions by 33,000 tons every year

Prague, 14 April 2009 - Modernization of the T-Mobile 2G network is under way. In addition to a number of technological advantages, the new technology and equipment have a significantly positive impact on our environment, as they consume nearly 50% less energy than those previously in use. This also means a decrease in CO2 emissions by 33,000 tons.

The new technology offers a 30% saving on power consumption compared with that previously in use. A further saving of up to 15%, which means further positive effect on the environment, will be achieved thanks to software tools that optimize network performance depending on network load. For example, the capacity of selected transmitters is optimized during night hours, which is then reflected in the total power consumption.

Saving energy reduces carbon dioxide emissions generated during energy production. After the completion of the modernization process in 2010, carbon dioxide emissions will be reduced by 33,000 tons.

"The replacement of 2G equipment during the first phase of the modernization process this year will help reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 15,000 tons," says Martina Kemrová, spokesperson for T-Mobile, adding: "The impact on the environment was one of the criteria in selecting the supplier. We are very pleased to see that the new technology proved to be even more environmentally friendly than we expected."

While in 1996 the average power consumption of a single base transceiver station (BTS) was approximately 2,000 watts of power, in 2005 it was only 1,200 watts. Huawei's technology, which was selected for modernization of the T-Mobile 2G network, requires only 600 watts.

As a matter of interest, one person living in an apartment of 50 square meters produces 1.5 tons of carbon dioxide per year. A round-trip flight from Paris to New York generates about 10 tons of carbon dioxide.
