T-Mobile increased the number of LTA-A transmitters fivefold last year

A total of 969 new transmitters supporting LTE-Advanced technology were installed in 2016

LTE-A to be installed on more than one-third of all LTE transmitters at the end of 2017

In the course of last year, the operator increased the number of its LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) transmitters approximately fivefold. LTE-A technology is based on the combination of frequency bands by means of the carrier aggregation function, which makes it possible to achieve higher data speeds than with standard LTE. At the end of 2015, T-Mobile had 256 LTE-A base stations, mostly in half of Prague and the city’s immediate surroundings. One year later, there were 1,225 transmitters supporting this technology in operation in the entire western part of the Czech Republic and in Brno. This year, the operator plans to have LTE-A installed on one-third of its LTE base stations. Aggregation of frequency bands is currently supported by approximately 40% of smartphones on offer from T-Mobile.

The operator installed the vast majority of LTE-A transmitters in 2016 in the western part of the Czech Republic and in Brno. These transmitters use aggregation of the 800 MHz band (with the 10 MHz bandwidth) and the 2100 MHz band (with the 10 MHz bandwidth), which, when combined, allow maximum download and upload speeds of 150 Mbps and 50 Mbps, respectively – twice as much as allowed by the standard LTE technology in these regions.

Several dozen LTE-A transmitters were also added in the centre of Prague, which combine the 800 MHz band (with the 10 MHz bandwidth) and the 1800 MHz band (with up to the 20 MHz bandwidth) and offer theoretical maximum download and upload speeds of 225 Mbps and 50 Mbps, respectively.

On several transmitters in Prague’s Petrovice district, T-Mobile combined three bands (800 MHz, 1800 MHz and 2600 MHz) while also using 4x4 MIMO technology based on doubling the antenna systems, thus reaching theoretical download speeds of up to 335 Mbps in this area.

LTE and LTE-A coverage at the end of the years 2015 and 2016

This year, the operator plans to roll out more than 1,100 LTE-A transmitters across the Czech Republic and further expand coverage with this technology in the nation’s capital and its surrounding area. By the end of 2017, LTE-A should be installed on 38% of all base stations that are used to provide coverage with T-Mobile’s fastest mobile internet service.

T-Mobile was the first operator to have launched LTE-A in the Czech Republic at the end of June 2014 in Mladá Boleslav by combining the 800 MHz and 1800 MHz bands. In December 2015, the operator was the first to combine three bands – 800 MHz, 1800 MHz and 2100 MHz – in two locations in Prague and its surrounding area, thus increasing the theoretical maximum speed in its network to 375 Mbps.
