Fast mobile data for almost 50% of the Czech population

  • Internet 4G: more than 90% of Prague's territory covered
  • T-Mobile EDGE available in more than 1,000 cities and towns

Prague, 1 December 2005 - T-Mobile EDGE is now offered in more than 1,000 Czech cities and towns and is thus available to almost 50% of the Czech population. Customers enthusiastically welcomed the launch of the first UMTS high-speed data network - and the Internet 4G service, although the service is currently available only in Prague. As of its launch, Internet 4G is available in more than 90% of Prague's area.

On 19 October 2005, T-Mobile introduced Internet 4G in Prague, the first UMTS service in the Czech Republic. This service is intended not only for mobile internet access but particularly for high-speed internet access in homes, as it offers transmission speeds of up to 1 Mbps. Coverage has now been extended to almost 90% of Prague's territory; dozens of base stations will be added by the end of the first quarter of 2006, thus improving the coverage in Prague. A high concentration of base stations within the covered area is a guarantee of sufficient network capacity and high-quality connection for customers. Fast mobile data will soon also be available in the areas outside Prague - in the first half of 2006, UMTS TDD coverage will be extended to other large cities and towns; more than 900 Czech cities and towns should thus be covered.

Over 50% of customers who use Internet 4G have selected the Premium tariff offering internet connection at the speed of up to 1 Mbps, the monthly price of which includes access via Internet 4G as well as unlimited EDGE, GPRS and WiFi access. The standard UMTS network based on the UMTS FDD technology offers connection speeds at approximately one-third the level of those offered by UMTS TDD.

In the past few months, T-Mobile has focused on extending EDGE coverage to other cities and towns and on increasing the coverage in cities already covered. At present, almost 50% of the Czech population can use high-speed mobile internet access via EDGE that offers speeds of up to 236 kbps.

By extending EDGE coverage, 50% of the Czech population can now make use of fast mobile internet access, as well as other unique services based on data transmission. Only T-Mobile thus offers residents of more than 1,000 cities and towns the possibility of using advanced mobile multimedia applications such as mobile high-quality videostreaming. In the middle of November, for example, T-Mobile launched t-music videozona which allows customers to play video on their phone's display free of charge. T-Mobile EDGE also increases customer convenience when using other services - i.e., in the case of WAP, users will certainly appreciate shorter response times when downloading websites and pictures, and the times for receiving and sending MMS with high-quality photos and for downloading logos or ringtones are significantly shortened.

The number of customers using unlimited internet access via GPRS/EDGE has reached nearly 60,000. The total number of customers who use internet access with any of T-Mobile's data tariffs (including unlimited) has exceeded the mark of 100,000. Monthly data traffic in the T-Mobile network via GPRS/EDGE has doubled year-on-year.

The number of customers who use data services depends, to a large extent, on the availability of terminals supporting data technologies. T-Mobile is continuously extending its offer of handsets and other terminals supporting EDGE. At present, customers may choose from 7 handsets, 2 PCMCIA cards for notebooks, or a modem for desk-top PCs. This is definitely not the final number of terminals offered. In the case of Internet 4G, customers may choose a modem or a PC card. Customers appreciate the possibility of trying out Internet 4G at home for a period of three days free of charge; the number of test terminals in T-Mobile Retail Shops has therefore been doubled after the first weeks of providing the service.

Customers can verify the current availability of T-Mobile data services in a given area by sending a SMS with the text INTERNET to 4616. They will then receive information on which data services can be used in a given location. The request SMS is charged as an ordinary SMS. Information on current coverage can also be found at http://mapy.t-mobile.cz, where customers can enter the name of their town or municipality and street address.
